Strategies for Organizing Time & Materials: Keep it Simple, Keep it SMART

In the increasingly complex world of education, teachers as well as students can struggle with the level of organization required to be successful. This presentation will help us think about aspects of organization (such as space, materials and time). Attendees will learn practical strategies that they can implement to help both educators and students succeed and experience less stress.

Shelly Levy, M.Ed., M.S., Director of SMARTS Training

Shelly Levy, M.Ed., M.S. is Director of SMARTS Training and an Educational Specialist and has been with the organization since 2017. As Director of SMARTS Training, Shelly creates and leads professional development training and webinars on executive function strategy instruction and the implementation of the SMARTS Executive Function Curriculum. She also provides coaching to general education and special education teachers across the country.

 As an Educational Specialist, Shelly works with students of all ages, elementary age through college, who struggle with learning, attention, and executive function challenges and provides specialized instruction and academic support in the areas of reading, writing, test preparation, and executive function skills.

Shelly has been in the field of Special Education for over 30 years with the majority of her career as a Director of Support Services. She holds a M.Ed. in Special Education from David Yellin College of Education, Jerusalem and a M.S. in Management from Lesley University. 

Joan Steinberg, M.Ed., Director of Educational Therapy

Joan Steinberg, M.Ed. is the Director of Educational Therapy at ResearchILD and has been a member of the ResearchILD staff since 1996. She provides consultations to parents and teachers, educational therapy, and executive function coaching to students. Her recent interest has been helping college students develop executive function strategies to ensure their success. 

Previously, Joan was a special education teacher and then the Director of Education at The Harbor Schools, Inc., a residential treatment center for adolescents. She co-authored the text Strategies for Success: Classroom Teaching Techniques for Students With Learning Differences- 2nd Edition and also co-authored the chapter, “The Strategic Math Classroom” in Meltzer et. al. Executive Function in Education. 

Joan has an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from the University of Rochester (Phi Beta Kappa) and earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of North Carolina.
